Joanna Chan began her piano learning at the age of four. In 2006, she gained her bachelor of music at the University of Southern Queensland. Whilst pursuing her music study in Australia, Joanna learnt from the federal examiner of A.M.E.B., Prof. Wendy Lorenz, and graduated with High Distinction in both Piano performance and Concerto Study. In 2006, she won the The Most Outstanding Performance Award for playing piano concerto - Capriccio Brillante by Mendelssohn. Upon her return to Hong Kong, she gained 3rd place in the Hong Kong Youth Barclampory Music Festival competition. During her time in Australia, Joanna also performed in various concerts, including the concerto concert with USQ orchestra and the concert celebrating Mozart's 250th birthday at St. Luke's Anglican Cathedral, Australia.

After graduation, she returned to Hong Kong and dedicated her career as a piano teacher and accompanist. As the founder of Octave Above Music Studio and a professional piano teacher, her students have also won numerous championships in various local competitions, including the Hong Kong Music Festival competition, Hong Kong Asia-Pacific Youth Piano Competition, Hong Kong Youth Barclampory Music Festival and the Hong Kong Youth Music Competiton. In 2015, Hong Kong Asia-Pacific Youth Piano Competition issued Joanna the Teacher's Award. She also received the Best Teacher Award from multiple organizations, including the Hong Kong Music for Youth, Hong Kong Youth Performance Art & Development Association. 

As an accompanist, Joanna's work has included multiple local instrumental competitions, as well as international double bass competitions in Paris， Berlin and Lucca. She also worked as an accompanist for the Central & Western Hong Kong Children's Choir.
